Description

National Director, Field Medical Affairs

Reporting to: Vice President, Medical Affairs

Do you have the passion and commitment to join a group whose mission is to develop treatments that have a clear and profound impact on patients suffering from rare diseases? Does it excite you to be a part of a patient-focused company developing potential new treatments that could dramatically improve the lives of patients with limited to no current treatment options? If yes, we encourage you to share with us your aspirations and career goals.

X4 is focused on restoring healthy immune system function by developing novel therapeutics to treat chronic neutropenic disorders, including WHIM syndrome, a rare primary immunodeficiency. We are advancing a novel, late-stage clinical candidate, mavorixafor, that we believe has the potential to become a new standard of care for patients with these disorders. We know that developing innovative, new medicines is challenging, and we invite new colleagues who share our values and commitment to join us in achieving our mission.

This opportunity will …

  • Align with your values and grit, and passion for innovative science.
  • Leverage your deep knowledge of Medical Affairs to support our innovative science and allow you to have a major impact on our mission to support our patients.
  • Offer a collegial environment with a team-based approach, where our mission drives our values, behaviors, and creativity.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

The National Director, Field Medical Affairs will build and manage a growing, high-performing team of field-based Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs). This is a high visibility position responsible for determining and executing the Medical Affairs field strategy. As a predominantly externally focused position, this role serves as a medical and scientific representative to the medical community of health care professionals (HCPs), key opinion leaders (KOLs), and science and clinical investigators. This individual will engage in scientific exchange to further the knowledge and appropriate use of the company’s products, and further the company’s understanding of unmet medical needs in the research and clinical development areas. Internally, this individual is a key leader in Medical Affairs with direct accountability for the performance of the Medical Affairs field team. In addition, this role serves as an internal medical and scientific expert, expanding the company’s knowledge and capabilities through continuous training and communication of medical and scientific evidence, along with insights from the field, and by contributing to Research & Development (R&D) and Commercial strategies.

  • Oversee, recruit, train, develop, and retain a high-performing team of field-based MSLs.
  • Develop and implement strategic Medical Affairs field plans and objectives; oversee execution of these plans and manage the associated budget; develop and provide meaningful reporting on Medical Affairs field activities.
  • Maintain an organizational infrastructure with appropriate geographical distribution for the Medical Affairs field team; ensure robust training and monitor performance of the team.
  • Lead the identification of and interactions with KOLs in designated disease areas and/or geography on a national and regional level and, when appropriate, on a local community level.
  • Oversee appropriate scientific exchange with the external medical community of HCPs, KOLs and investigators through robust and balanced communication of medical and scientific information on the company’s pipeline programs and marketed products, along with their disease states.
  • Drive and facilitate expansion of research, advisory, and educational partnerships with the external medical community.
  • Ensure appropriate representation and discussion of medical and scientific information on the company’s products in settings such as advisory boards, presentations to payers, formulary decision makers, and other HCPs.
  • Oversee the Medical Affairs field team engagements and interactions with advocacy groups and professional societies to ensure appropriate education on medical and scientific information relevant to the company’s products.
  • Direct field-based Medical Affairs attendance and coverage at congresses and meetings, including contributing to meeting planning efforts through close collaboration with internal colleagues.
  • Monitor the competitive environment to sustain expertise in therapeutic area treatment management and new therapies, competitive products, and features, and provide feedback to the Medical Affairs leadership team on specific initiatives.
  • Gain customer insights, opinions and ensure regular sharing of this feedback to internal colleagues such that continual improvements to processes and materials can be implemented, and potential business opportunities can be realized.
  • Connect with internal stakeholders to ensure strategic and tactical alignment of the Medical Affairs field team both within the wider Medical Affairs organization, and with other company departments including R&D and Commercial.
  • Maintain policies and processes to guide daily operations of the Medical Affairs field team; ensure operational tools, materials, and equipment are available to the team to support their productivity.
  • Ensure and enforce compliant and appropriate practices in all HCP interactions.

Requirements:  Proven Experience, Skills, and Education:

  • Doctorate degree (PhD, PharmD, MD or equivalent) is required.
  • 10+ years of relevant pharmaceutical/biotech industry experience and 5-8+ years of field-based Medical Affairs leadership experience.
  • Previous experience in rare disease preferred; hematology and/or immunology experience is a plus.
  • Established expertise in the development and management of a Medical Affairs field team with a track record of success.
  • Ability to set strategy, assess performance, and drive excellence while motivating and influencing teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with established competencies in relationship management and working with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage field-based insights to add value to strategic and tactical initiatives.
  • Written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly articulate complex scientific concepts to any audience.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed with excellent time management and prioritization abilities.
  • Full understanding of compliance related to interactions with HCPs, along with knowledge of applicable legal and regulatory guidelines governing Medical Affairs field-based activities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally (at least 50% of time) and internationally as needed, including some weekends.
  • This position will require travel to Boston, MA, offering a remote work arrangement.
