Certification Content Manager
Reports to: Certification and Programs Director - American Board of Pediatric Dentistry
Employment status: Full-time, salaried
Work location: Remote
Schedule: Primarily standard business hours, with occasional evening or weekend meetings based on committee schedules and program needs
POSITION SUMMARY
The Certification Content Manager leads the operational development and quality-control processes for assessment content used in ABPD initial and continuing certification programs. The role manages item-writing assignments and review workflows, supports item-writing committees, and helps ensure item development activities are conducted in accordance with established ABPD policies, examination development standards, and applicable accreditation requirements.
Working closely with item-writing committee leaders and members, ABPD staff, and psychometric consultants, the Certification Content Manager supports examination validity and psychometric integrity through established quality-control processes, careful content review, and data-informed decision-making. The role also contributes to the continuous improvement and innovation of item development methodologies, workflows, systems, and committee training.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Item & Assessment Content Development
- Lead the development and management of item-writing assignments based on examination blueprints, gap analyses, and program priorities.
- Perform item pool analyses to identify content needs, deficiencies, and areas requiring additional item development.
- Conduct quality-control reviews of assessment items, including:
- Grammar, clarity, style, and consistency
- Identification of potential test flaws or ambiguities
- Alignment with ABPD policies, examination development standards, and applicable accreditation requirements
- Manage committee examination review workflows and coordinate the steps required to finalize examination forms and certification content.
- Maintain accurate and current databases of items, images, references, and metadata within item-banking systems.
- Collaborate with psychometric consultants to review item statistics, identify potential concerns, and recommend revisions or other appropriate actions.
Committee Development, Facilitation & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as staff liaison to examination-related committees, workgroups, and task forces as assigned.
- Develop and maintain productive professional relationships with committee leaders, committee members, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
- Plan and facilitate effective in-person and virtual item-development and review meetings, including preparation of materials, agendas, and follow-up activities as needed.
- Monitor committee timelines, assignments, decisions, and deliverables; communicate risks or delays and coordinate follow-up to keep work on schedule.
- Develop, maintain, and deliver onboarding, guidance, and ongoing training for committee leaders and members related to item development and review processes.
- Assessment Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Use item-performance metrics, psychometric data, reviewer feedback, and process measures to identify opportunities to improve assessment content and development processes.
- Support examination validity and psychometric integrity by applying established quality-control processes and collaborating with psychometric consultants and other subject-matter experts.
- Contribute to the evaluation and continuous improvement of item-development methodologies, committee practices, and quality standards.
Systems, Workflow & Content Infrastructure
- Collaborate on system enhancements related to item banking, assessment delivery, content review, and committee workflows.
- Maintain current task lists, process documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), templates, and other resources needed to support consistent item-development operations.
- Identify workflow inefficiencies and recommend or implement improvements within the scope of the role.
- Effectively use ABPD technology platforms and adapt to new systems and tools as organizational needs evolve.
Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree.
Project management experience, including the ability to manage multiple concurrent assignments, deadlines, and stakeholders.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to identify inconsistencies, gaps, and quality concerns.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and/or demonstrated ability to learn and effectively utilize new software, including Microsoft Office, item-banking software, task-management software, and other technology platforms.
Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining effective communication, organization, responsiveness, and accountability.
Ability to occasionally participate in evening or weekend meetings based on committee schedules and program needs.
Ability to travel approximately 1-3 times annually for periods of approximately 3-6 days.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in assessment development, credentialing, certification, testing, or a related field.
Experience supporting item-writing committees, volunteer committees, or other expert workgroups.
Experience developing process documentation, SOPs, training materials, or committee guidance.
